Yesterday, a team of NETA Cares volunteers and runners supported the American Cancer Society’s 6th Annual Purple Run at Look Memorial Park. This was the first year that the Purple Run received an overwhelming amount of support from its sponsors and was able to cover all the costs of the event. Meaning, all registration proceeds were sent directly to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Hampshire County in June. NETA Cares was proud to be a sponsor contributing to such a wonderful cause.
This event drew almost 500 participants in Look Memorial Park, Florence, MA, with runners from New York, Vermont, and New Haven. There was also a craft fair with over 30 vendors, including a photo booth for participants to capture snapshots of the day. NETA Cares volunteers helped to set up the course, making sure the signage led the runners in the right direction. They also were responsible for the water stops along the way.
Kelly, NETA Cares volunteer, commented, “The Purple Run is an event I look forward to being part of every year. The American Cancer Society is a great organization and I am happy to have the opportunity to be involved in our community, and with this organization. As the event continues to grow, so does the need for volunteers. This year I was able to put signs up around the entire race route, and assist at the water stop for runners. It was fun to encourage people to keep up the great work. My day ended with the organizer giving me a hug and telling me he couldn’t do this without NETA Cares’ help! Can’t wait for next year!”
The Purple Run started in 2012 and has raised $11,000 for the American Cancer Society since then. NETA Cares was excited to have volunteers and runners participating in the Purple Run for a second year in a row. And great for us, it was a beautiful day! What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with some volunteer work outside in a beautiful park.
