NETA Cares has a lot to celebrate, and it is not just because it is Friday. Over the last couple months, Brookline and Northampton have been encouraging patients and employees to participate in donation drives benefiting Cancer Connection and Keys for Hope. The support received was overwhelming and inspiring – we are so happy to have contributed to such great organizations in impacting ways.
Northampton was collecting gently used or new shoes for Cancer Connection. Cancer Connection offers programs and support free of charge for men, women and children living with a cancer diagnosis. Patients and employees were encouraged to bring in shoes in exchange for a 10% off coupon. Northampton successfully collected a half ton-worth of shoes – over 1,000 lbs. of footwear! These will all be available at the Cancer Connection thrift shop, winner of Advocate Best of the Valley Readers’ Poll awards this year.
Brookline was seeking keys from the community and its employees. All keys are turned over to Keys for Hope. They melt the keys into scrap metal and sell it for money. The money is then used to buy meals and food for a food bank of choice. Brookline chose the Greater Food Bank of Boston this year, and was able to effectively accumulate 216 lbs. of keys, which translates into 750 meals! The Greater Boston Food Bank works passionately to end hunger in Eastern MA by providing people in need with the healthy food and resources they need.
The drives will not stop here! Up next for Northampton is a food drive for Northampton Survival Center. Brookline will be collecting towels, blankets and sheets for MSPCA-Angell.
